The journey, step by step

Cacao tree
Chocolate begins with seeds inside the fruit of a cacao tree.
Harvest
Ripe cacao fruits, called pods, are carefully picked from the tree.
Opened pod
Open the pod to find seeds covered in soft white fruit pulp.
Wet beans
The seeds, also called cacao beans, are collected with their pulp.
Fermentation
The beans rest while natural microbes break down the pulp. This is fermentation.
Drying
After fermentation, the beans are spread out to dry and lose moisture.
Roasted beans & nibs
The beans are roasted and cracked. Their shells are removed, leaving small pieces called nibs.
Grinding & refining
The nibs are ground into a paste and refined to give chocolate a smooth texture.
Shaping the bar
Chocolate is carefully heated and cooled, then poured into moulds to set into bars.
Wrap & enjoy
The bar is wrapped and ready to enjoy. From a fruit on a tree to your hands.
